Batch File Rename Tool

Strip trailing suffixes from a batch of files in one go. Built originally for the -Model and -Layout1 suffixes AutoCAD adds during batch-plotting, but works on any files with a common trailing pattern. Drop in, preview, download as a zip. Your files never leave your browser.

Tip: AutoCAD adds the layout name to plotted filenames when you publish multiple sheets at once. The -Model and -Layout1/2/3 patterns cover most cases. Tick the third option only if your layouts are named (e.g. -Site Plan, -Ground Floor): it strips anything after a hyphen near the end of the name, which can be too aggressive on filenames that genuinely contain a trailing word.

About this tool

Anywhere you have a batch of files with the same trailing suffix, this tool will strip it for you. The classic example, and what we built it for, is AutoCAD's PUBLISH command on a set of sheets. Every output filename gets a layout suffix tacked on. A drawing called Site Plan A.dwg becomes Site Plan A-Model.pdf. A 30-sheet set ends up with 30 filenames you have to rename one by one before you can send them to a client. But the tool works just as well on Revit exports, ArchiCAD output, batch-renamed photo sets or any folder of files with a common trailing pattern.

This tool batches it. Drop any number of files in (no upload, all processing happens in your browser), choose which suffixes to strip, and download the renamed set as a zip. Works on any file extension, PDF, DWF, PLT, JPG, DOCX, anything.

How it handles edge cases

If a stripped name would collide with an existing file in the set, the tool flags it so you can decide. If a file doesn't match any of the patterns you've chosen, it passes through unchanged. The browser version of the tool can't actually rename files on your disk (no browser can), so what you get is a zip containing copies with the new names, you then extract over the originals.

Frequently asked

Is this really free?

Yes. No sign-up, no payment, no daily cap. Runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript, your files never leave your computer.

Does it modify the original files?

No. The tool creates a zip containing renamed copies. The originals on your disk are untouched. To replace the originals, just extract the zip over them.

What if two renamed files would have the same name?

If stripping the suffix would create a collision (e.g. Sheet 1-Model.pdf and Sheet 1-Layout1.pdf both become Sheet 1.pdf), the tool flags both and skips the rename so you can decide what to do. You can rename one of them manually before zipping, or just include both originals.

How do I stop AutoCAD adding the suffix in the first place?

You can't fully, on most AutoCAD versions, the suffix is added by PUBLISH whenever multiple sheets share the same output filename. The workaround in AutoCAD is to use a Sheet Set (DST) with carefully chosen sheet titles, but it's fiddly. Most users find it faster to plot first and rename after, which is why this tool exists.

Will it work on DWF and PLT files, not just PDF?

Yes. The tool only looks at the filename, not the file content, so any extension works. Drop in DWF, PLT, JPG, anything AutoCAD plots to.

Does it work for non-AutoCAD plot files?

Yes, anywhere you have a batch of files with the same trailing suffix pattern. Revit's PDF exports, ArchiCAD output, batch-renamed photo sets etc., all are handled. Use the "Custom suffix" box for anything not covered by the defaults.
